The ruling family of Sarum, whose household will feature in the fellowship's next chronicle.
Dowager Countess of Salisbury
Orphaned at 13 and married to Count Roderick in a state marriage arranged by King Uther. Held Salisbury together as regent through the Anarchy and her son Robert's minority; temperate and unsentimental by nature, and still a power behind the throne in matters of Justice and Family.
Count of Salisbury (d. 495)
Energetic, fearless, and consumed by hatred of the Saxons after his own father's murder in the Night of the Long Knives. Died in 495, leaving Salisbury to his widow's regency.
Count of Salisbury
Born 492, three years old when his father died. Rules in his own right as of 519, obsessively fortifying Sarum against the chaos he witnessed as a ward and child — his father's fury redirected into permanent defense.
Squires of Sarum — Household Knights
The knights of Count Robert's household at Sarum.
Marshal of Salisbury
The current Marshal of Salisbury, whose blunt, unsentimental training style stands in deliberate contrast to her predecessor Sir Lycus's brutal creed.
Former Marshal (d. 508)
Believed a knight's worth lay only in his sword arm; an old rival of Dame Aspara, who succeeded him as Marshal.
Watch-captain of Sarum
Unmarried; once pursued the hand of the heiress Lady Gwiona in his youth and never fully recovered from losing her.
Household knight
Even-tempered — famously "like his grandfather" — and married to Sir Edern's youngest sister, Lady Eirian.
"The Knight of the Old Ways"
One of the few Pagan knights of the household, and proud of the sobriquet.
The Countess's champion
Fights in Lady Ellen's stead in trials by combat; served Count Roderick personally and adopted the ideals of Chivalry the moment Arthur promulgated them.
Instructor of squires
Son of Sir Jarren, a former squire of Dame Aspara, and a close personal friend of Count Robert since childhood.
Household knight
Son of the renowned Sir Elad the Elder; nurses fierce resentment at being passed over for the Marshalcy.
Castellan of Westfort Castle
Cheerful and young, with a well-established fondness for drink and exaggerated hunting stories; obsessed with the exotic beasts of Salisbury's forests.
"The Weeping Knight," castellan of the Rock
Appointed castellan of Sarum Castle on Lady Ellen's specific advice. Possessed of extraordinary physical endurance, but reduced to tears by administrative paperwork.
Squires of Sarum — Ladies of the Court
Lady Jenna's entourage and the noble ladies of Sarum.
Of a fallen noble family
A skilled gambler and sharp-tongued gossip, entertaining company that Lady Jenna is fond of.
Jenna's chief handmaiden
Sought in marriage by Squire Kenrick — a built-in rival subplot for any other suitor.
Kenrick's younger sister
Meek, and living under her brother's guardianship since their father's death at Netley Marsh.
Sir Pyrs's sister
A great beauty whose modest dowry attracts less serious suitors than her looks might otherwise draw.
Ward of Countess Ellen
Daughter of a household knight killed at the Battle of Mearcred Creek; plain but brash and witty, and a celebrated embroiderer.
Squires of Sarum — Castle Household
The staff and retainers of Sarum Castle.
Runs the kitchens
Gruff and proud of his table; feuds constantly and affectionately with Brewer Osian.
Former wet-nurse
Nursed both Jenna and Robert as infants; keeper of thirty years of nursery gossip.
Head Laundress
Sharp-eyed and sharper-tongued; arguably knows more of the castle's real secrets than anyone.
The Falconer
Quiet and more comfortable with birds than people; deeply loyal to those who respect his hawks.
Stablemaster
Efficient and fair, well-liked by the squires he trains alongside.
Kennel-keeper
Big-hearted, and treats the hounds like children.
Castle chaplain
Mild and genuinely pastoral; hears more confession-adjacent gossip than he ever repeats.
The Smith
Broad, taciturn, and enormously proud of his work.
Brews the castle's ale
Jovial and well-loved; in constant, good-natured dispute with Cook Alun.
Gate-porter
Nosy and gossipy; first to know when a stranger arrives.
Lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Countess
Older and dry-witted; fiercely protective of Lady Ellen's dignity.
Lady-in-waiting to Lady Catherine
Young and recently arrived from Uffington in 517; still finds Sarum's customs a little strange.
Minstrel
Talented and vain, and adores an audience; knows songs and stories from well beyond Salisbury.
Squires of Sarum — Village of Sarum
The commonfolk of the town below the castle.
Runs the town's main inn
Warm and talkative; arguably the best-informed commoner in Sarum.
Owns the river mill
Comfortable and a little smug, in constant low-grade dispute with local farmers over toll rates.
Works the tanning trade
Gruffly proud of his usefulness despite the trade's low status.
Widow, runs a weaving business
Sharp with money but quietly generous, extending credit to families who lose their harvest.
Folk healer and midwife
The town's genuinely skilled wise woman, viewed with a mix of gratitude and superstition.
Village priest
Overworked and earnest, and a little resentful of how little support the town church receives.
The Count's man in town
Fair but by-the-book, collecting tolls and settling small disputes.
A charming poacher
Known to take the odd deer from the Count's forest; shares with poorer neighbors, so most look the other way.
Runs the river crossing
Taciturn, missing two fingers, and his account of how changes depending on who's asking.
Traveling merchant
Genial and slightly untrustworthy on prices, an excellent source of outside news.
Keeps to the edge of town
Quiet, and knows the woods and hedgerows better than almost anyone.
A Badon veteran
Fought at Mount Badon and never fully recovered; walks with a limp but tells a genuinely gripping war story.
